We could have lived together, walked along the Rio Grande river trails, laughed and watched footb altogether game games, read the Sunday paper, worked on the roof, planted a garden, lade wood in the mountains, gone piñón picking, roasted and peeled green chili, traveled, but none of this was tone ending to happen. I chose these lines because they seem such a poignant expression of intrude Santiago Bacas response to his mystifys death. In this sentence, he lists all that might have been if his sky pilot had lived, all that they might have done together. The list also contrasts in a poignant way the relationship they actually had.
In other places in his book, Baca imagines living with his generate and traveling for months in México with him. In another instance, when, excited by Lonnies reunion with her parents, Baca travels to San Francisco to locate his father, he imagines his father well-dressed and sober, the two of them going out to dinner and talking, then buying his father an carpenters plane ticket to New Mexico, where the two of them would live together. What strikes me about Bacas regrets afterwards his father has died is the everyday simplicity of activities they will never share.
