It was the year 1854, the season of spring. The blackleg grew long and tall and the flowers were blooming of all different colours. My baby and I loved to lope amongst the fields and lie down and watch the clouds shift. Her name was Gracie, and my name is Olivia. We were best friends, more than merely sisters; we were all each other had.
It was a Sun mean solar day, and that was the day the Johnsons family went on an outing. So Gracie and I went to the fields. We would steal and put on the Johnsons female child’s sunflower dresses especially. Her name was Annabelle. She was beautiful; from what we saw in the photographs. Long blonde curly hair, vivid blue eyeball and pale white skin. The key word being white. only the pretty ones were.
We stayed at the fields nearly all day; it was my favourite place in the world. It was the only place where I felt normal and peaceful.
Sometimes, if I closed my eyes, I imagined I was like the Johnsons. I imagined that the beautiful sunflower dress I was wearing was mine. I felt proud to be myself, barely then I’d wake up and I would see that same dark stain all everywhere my body. That never disappearing curse.
Gracie would always pick a flower of every colour and bring them back to mum. The sun was starting signal to fade, so we chased each other back home. As usual mum was taking the washing of the line at this time of night. We quickly scattered into the tin shed. The only footing we could live on the Johnson’s land was if Gracie, dumb and I were to be there slaves.
